Department of Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences & Disorders

What We Do:

We prepare caring, knowledgeable health professionals through rigorous academic study, experiential learning and service to individuals, families and communities. Our students go on to become occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and audiology professionals who serve diverse populations with competence, compassion and a commitment to social justice.

Our programs focus on helping people to participate fully in their everyday lives and communicate across the lifespan. Students learn in a Jesuit educational environment that emphasizes professional knowledge, ethical practice and meaningful service.

How We Stand Out:

  • State-of-the-art facilities with well-equipped practice labs
  • Extensive research labs
  • Clinical experience embedded in the academic program
  • Strong community partnerships
  • Diverse and dedicated faculty

Programs:

  • - The CSD bachelor’s degree prepares students for careers as speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The program explores the many types of impairments in communication, swallowing and hearing, and how to treat them.
  • - The University offers a five-year, entry-level Master of Science (MS) degree program in Occupational Therapy (OT) and a six-year, entry-level Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD). Students learn physical, psychological and cognitive foundations of human performance and gain skills to help people with limitations caused by illness, injury, developmental delays or normal aging.
  • - The online SLP program prepares students to provide services for individuals from culturally/linguistically diverse backgrounds with various types and severities of communication and/or related disorders, differences and disabilities across the lifespan.

Meet Our Faculty:

Our faculty strive to provide guidance and support for students. They maintain an open-door policy, involve students in their research, and make it a priority to get to know each student on an individual level.

Inside the Classroom:

We emphasize active and experiential learning in our programs. For example, OT students work in specialized labs like our sensory-motor play environment, and independent living apartment. CSD students participate in community-based learning opportunities, working with children, older adults and diverse populations in various settings, while also engaging in clinical case study reviews and projects analyzing current research. SLP students work with children in a summer program for speech and language enrichment.
